Our Story
At Crown London, our journey has been one of passion, community, and transformation. As we close our doors, we reflect on the incredible story that began in 2015 and evolved over the years. What started as a dream has grown into a beloved hub in Crouch End, touching lives and leaving a lasting legacy.
It all started in 2015 when we secured a startup loan to turn a lifelong aspiration into reality. After a residency in Mayfair, London and consulting and coaching over 100 salon owners across the UK. It was time to create something of Jay’s own.
Crown London Salon was more than just a hair salon—it was a vibrant community hub, a place to relax and connect. You'd pop in for a haircut and often find a friend in the chair next to you. We began by transforming a former hair laser removal clinic at 24 Park Road in Crouch End into one of the area's most talked-about destinations. With the help of a dedicated builder, we brought Jay’s vision to life in just a few months.
Our early success was immediate. Within three months of opening, we were finalists for the British Hairdressing Business Awards for Best Newcomer. A year later, we were honored as finalists again for the same award, setting the stage for our continued growth.
Over the years, Crown London evolved to meet the needs of our community. We started as a four-seater salon with a beauty room, but after some experimentation—including adding an art gallery—we recognized the demand for more space. We expanded to an eight-chair salon, and it was often packed, with the energy buzzing from wall to wall.
This growth allowed us to innovate and adapt. We developed our signature technique, Intelligent Highlights, which quickly became one of our best-selling colour services and a favorite among clients. We also launched our sister company, Roots and Locks Salon Professional Hair Care, in 2022, after years of meticulous testing and refinement. The line was a hit, earning us the Best Salon Professional Hair Oil award in 2024 at the Hair Awards, and we've continued to introduce new products ever since.
From the outset, giving back has been at the heart of who we are. We proudly supported causes close to our community, including donations to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospice, Mind in Haringey, and the Crouch End Food Banks. Whether it was contributing to school fairs or local events, we were always eager to lend a hand.
We immersed ourselves in Crouch End's vibrant life, participating in annual events like the Village Zombie Walk, Crouch End Festival, and Hornsey Carnival. These occasions not only brought joy but also highlighted the spirit that makes our neighborhood so special.
Even during challenging times, like the 2020 lockdown, our commitment never wavered. Unable to offer hair services, we pivoted to support the community by raising funds for NHS workers—providing 30 free haircuts and £4,500 worth of food to frontline heroes fighting COVID-19 in hospitals.
Our efforts didn't go unnoticed. We graced the headlines of major outlets, including Sky News, Grazia, Marie Claire, The Times, and Radio 4. We were nominated for Salon Team of the Year and twice for Salon Stylist of the Year in 2021 and 2022.
We also had the privilege of presenting our work on stage for Natulique, our colour partner, multiple times. These opportunities allowed us to showcase our creativity and spread an important message: the need to protect our planet.
On a lighter note, our salon became a haven for furry friends—we met so many of your pooches that it inspired us to adopt our own: Roots the Daisy Dog and Locks the Pom Chi. Roots even stole the spotlight on a Channel 4 documentary called Puppy School.
In 2022, we hosted our first salon party at the Victoria Stakes, where you all filled the dance floor, entertained by the fabulous Lashes drag performance. It was a night we'll never forget.
As we say goodbye, we want to extend our deepest thanks to everyone who has been part of the Crown London story. To our incredible team—Valerie, Debra, Ann, Dylan, Joanna, Claire, Sam, Elisa from Rome, Elisa from Tuscany, Caroline, Maurice, Vince, Darren, Melissa & Ruth, and all the assistants who supported us along the way—you helped build the legacy we're so proud of.
